Another announcement, this time of our new Standardized Tourney Rules. All of our tourneys going forward will follow these rules and this format so familiarise yourself with the style. Most of the rules are fairly standardized across the board, this is so we can get consistency and will allow us to create promotional materials from the battles. Standard Rules No holds barred - off-site personals allowed. - Again this is non-negotiable. Part of our problem on LA is that we're very "boxed in" and that makes it hard to attract new members. We as a site are going to be more active on social media, and (more information to come in the sign up threads) and we're going to encourage that the members do the same in order to create a "scene" around the new tourney circuit. Flipping is ON - flipping is a legitimate skill in emceeing, it isn't biting. Flipping isn't using the same punch, it's re-using the concept in a way that TURNS IT BACK ON AN OPPONENT, and is only effective if it was BETTER than the original. Don't fear a flip, just be better than the other guy. Standard no recycling/biting *for battlefield battles with "Tourney Rules" the person who made the callout goes FIRST by default. That is the "LA way." Text: 16 line verses (if it's 2 rounds, that's 2 16's) No explanations or links at all - we want this stuff to read well at face value tbh, we aren't going to be packaging wikipedia printouts with the final battle "products" No editing of text-style is allowed this is about your words not your presentation, leave that to us. Audio: 16 bar (lines) verses Both emcees spit consecutively on the same beat separated by the "hook section" All vocals must be provided "raw" by the deadline. I will be doing all the mixing/fx/production myself to ensure consistency in sound. Any breaking of this rule will be an instant disqualification. Only 1 live vocal is allowed, no doubles, no adlibs. We want this to feel like a live battle, not a track, any doubles will not be accepted and if you hard-wire it into the main vocal track you'll either have to re-record or miss your deadline. My best "advice" would be to think of it in terms of "audience" rather than "internet users". Generally personals translate if they're direct enough (never a problem dropping personals in a live battle with a crowd who don't know the people "personally") and be creative with the way you USE your concepts, obscurity is not synonymous with complexity. No, a coin will be flipped in each battle with the low-seed calling it. If you win the coin toss you pick the order. Serves me right for suggesting it I guess. I might just do it in tc one day, then people can come in and call it live and others can verify. And thanks for the kudos, as you'll hear from both me and Scoot "there's a lot more to come" in the future. And please don't overlook Scoot, I'm far from planning all of this stuff alone and tbh, no matter what ideas I have, none of them work without 1.Scoot approving them and 2.Scoot seeing my massive blunders in ideas and fixing them :P But yeah, this is a collaborative effort for real. Why should he have to prove anything? It's up to you guys to stay up on what's relevant in the scene. If I was you I'd worry less about the rules and more about your opponents. Just to clarify, any text that goes beyond the 16 bar limit (that's lines) will be deleted before it is sent to judges. It's not a 16 bar plus footnotes limit I'm afraid. Let me put it in really simple terms, live battlers don't get the opportunity after they've spit to recap all of their bars and illustrate why they were so good. We are emulating THAT sort of battle, over-convoluted ideas and "out-there" concepts won't play well. This is a case of "play to the audience/style," simply be direct. Think about it this way, everyone is in the same boat, and we want our battles to be more accessible to outsiders. This whole "old boys club" of LA with laziness and molly-coddling is the main reason we're struggling. We need new blood and we need to be more accessible. same as the rest of text bro, just 16 lines, no pictures no additional text (so there's no 1-line extras) we're trying to keep the format consistent across the "styles" so that we can display them the same way in some of the promotional materials.
