LA Magazine - iLL Scripturez Interview! *update*

Me:

Okay famsies.... See, I know you a bit. You're Ill, you rhyme (and do that very well) and been around for a bit. How would you describe yourself to people who dont know you?

Ill Scriptz:

Ummm... I’m actually pretty humble. I always offer advice and the person willing to help but when I feel like going off I go all the way. I’m really laid back and chill. I’m not sure if you’re looking for anything specific lol

Me:

Like, who is the person behind Ill? Obviously im not gonna ask your full name and social security code but I was just wondering what type of person you are beyond LA.

Ill Scriptz:

Ah gotcha. Well I’m father, a husband, a person who was absolutely set up to fail and didn’t. I take pride in being a dad the most as I didn’t had such a shit childhood. Also, I play ball and powerlift as hobbies outside of writing.

Me:

Oooo, I like that. I think we're pretty similar in that. I was set up to fail also but look at me now, a health insurance specialist! Lmao. What would you consider to be your greatest achievement outside of being a dad? Can be anything.

Ill Scriptz:

Great question. I was big into kickboxing from like 4-21 but like my mid-teens I really started to be real af at it. I lost in the Junior Olympic in ‘05 (I think) but then went and got 5 World Gold medals. Once I finish my MBA, that will be my new answer. Maybe even DBA. Ironically, all the self hype shit I post I hate bragging lol

*here I had to ask iLL what a DBA is cuz I'm a dumbass*

That's dope! I used to do martial arts also. You would totally whoop my ass though looking at those stats. And yes. Dr. iLL def sounds fire. How did you even get into hip hop?

Ill Scriptz:

My parents were classic rock people. One day I was at a buddy’s house and I heard Forgot About Dre and I was hooked. Then like i fell in love with that glamor rapper lifestyle lmao. I was rapping about TVs in the headrests and shit. Terrible, terrible stuff. Then I heard the Marshall Mathers LP and related so much to his anger that I went that route. Been writing ever since. Did audio for like 8 years as well.

Me:

Yeah, see, I wanted to ask that. A while back I heard you did audio as well. Waa this during a period that you wanted to try and become a pro rapper or did you keep doing it as a hobby? And why did you stop recording? That Doom collab would be fire on audio I think.

Ill Scriptz:

I was doing local shows and parties and was really doing well locally and in Philly. I had a studio in my house that was selfmade but I loved it. It was so fire red lights only shit was dope. I was prolly putting together a track a week for the longest though i never put out a record. My biggest downfall is going in 100 directions at once. I never really had the dream to make it but it was like if it happened so be it type of deal. One day I just stopped and honestly it was right when I was getting decent. No real reason but retrospectively I probably just burned myself out. If i could do that over I would’ve been more focused.

Me:

Damn, that hits home lol! I had a similar situation but I blame myself for not succeeding. I think the most important question would be if you have any regrets.

Ill Scriptz:

Overall in life or that particular part?

Me:

That particular part.

Ill Scriptz:

Either way the answer was gonna be fuck yeah man. I would’ve done a bunch of shit differently and marketed myself better. Been more confident earlier on. Shit like that. Had more of a business mind instead of the hobby one.

Me:

That sucks, but who knows, man? Maybe one day you'll decide to do an audio again and shit gets poppin. How did you end up on LA? Was it during that period or after the audio period?

After the audio period. I joined LA in 2014. It’s funny like 2000-2010 forums were poppin. And I was like I wonder if there’s one still active and came across LA. I been on forums for a grip and even hosted my own site for a month lol there was a stretch where there was tons of sites. I forget all of their names tho. Underground Legends was definitely one of them!

Me:
Damn, you definitely an old head. Can’t believe I've been on LA longer than you (I joined in 2009)... Let's spice this shit up a bit! You been here for 4 years. What were the most entertaining beefs to you?

Ill Scriptz:
Lol all the ones I put myself into. I liked when I beefed with Empire until Ransom made an entire track of fake personals. Then it got played, he apologized and moved forward. But I guess a close second would be the recent one with Self and last year with Cuba.

Me:
Did you beef with Cuba lol? I think I missed that haha. Tell us about the Self and Cuba ones. How did they spawn?

Ill Scriptz:
Strap in. Cuba’s developed from him having deleting threads, hiding posts to make it seem that members were lying. And when he got caught he undid it to make it seem that he was innocent. Shit is corny to me so I had to catch a body real fast. I called Self out a couple of times being like Real Hip Hop and just posting verses but not doing anything else. A person of his respect level and talent level should be offering more than his writtens. So I called him out on it and he didn’t like it. Said it was tongue and cheek and made a few sly comments openly in threads about me but never directly addressed me. Still got love for him though and his work but I handle mine when I feel like it’s necessary. Plus, I’ve been in a fuck it mood lately and trying to push myself.

Me:
That's weird, though. Self always dropped like mad detailed breakdowns back when I was a lot more active. I like the fuck it attitude, tho... and now you have another one going on. Crimbo Slice, how did that happen?

Ill Scriptz:
A mixture between me being bored and him commenting on me asking Smooth if his verse was his. He claimed it was me calling the kettle black but I’m waiting for him to show me where I’ve bitten verses, lyrics etc.

Ill Scriptz:

Damn, its like you're reading my mind lmaoooo. I think it's only fair for you to be able to defend yourself from the allegations. There were indeed claims that you bit something, and you spoke about it in a post. Could you clear it up once at for all?

Ill Scriptz:
Aiight so in a tourney (for money) I took a story and made it a written. I was told by people via PM only reason I was banned was because it was tourney. My defense was, it I did a written on a new article it would be no different. And I was agreed with by some and others felt differently. Idc either way. I never bit and never will. I got enough talent to be stealing lyrics is just stupid

Me:
So there weren't stolen lines, just an adaptation of an existing story... Yeah, I dont really have a problem with that. You mentioned the Smooth comment earlier. He was accused of biting, I think he admitted it (not sure) and still drops verses. Do you believe in second chances or is it like one and done?

Ill Scriptz:
Umm I’m always for second chances but they have to be earned. He just came back and he has talent so hopefully he sticks around.

Me:
Would you consider a collab with him?

Ill Scriptz:
Funny you asked. He PMed me earlier today. I denied it as I been wanting to cut my drops back because I am a big believer of quality over quantity and told him if he sticks around I’d consider it. He got offended. Oh well.

Me:

Yeah man. I mean I was nice about it at the same time keeping it real. He didn’t like that. Guess I gotta watch my verses. Rumor has it he had multiple accounts plus did it mad times on other sides.

Lol I mean if it came to that. It’s whatever. But he talk all that shit and drops a verse against Beans that was straight POOP

Hahaha lmaooo, I'd like to see that. You also said Neek should drop more. Funny enough I have a Neek verse that's waiting to get dropped but I'm so wack I still couldn't write my part :( Who's your absolute fav on the site apart from me?

Ill Scriptz:
LOL Neek is real dope. LOL umm I like the talent pool we have. I think the wide range of each artist is better than most other sites. As a group, we make each other better when it goes from topicals, battles etc. Sammy had me doing poetry in our collab. Other sites lack that wide range of ability and I’d say we are the best on the net. However I do wish we had a chat on the forum page bc tiny chat is whack but I know people will abuse it.

Me:
I definitely agree with you on that one. We have a really diverse team of artists and pretty much everyone excels in something or the other. Totally agree on the chat thing also. Get to working, Scoots! So, I think I asked all I wanted to ask. Do you have stuff you'd love to say?

My bad dude I started training. I havent got more really to say. I just appreciate the opportunity to be interviewed. Maybe I’ll do one for someone too.
