Ok. Im confused... There are some folks who are telling me to work on my accent a bit. I used to think the same but now its like, I shouldn't be copying/changing my accent as It represents where Im from. And trying to change it is like being unreal/phonny. What should I do? Also, if you think it needs to be changed, how can I do so? Help. |

Change your accent? hell no man, you are who you are. Look at how many battles are judged by Brits done by the Americans and all you see is "that didn't rhyme for me" and the other way around. I don't think you can change your accent unless you want to be phony like you said.. So just be you bro

I listened to some of your raps on youtube. Your accent is perfectly fine brothaman. I actually like it because your syllables pop more and have more emphasis. No joke, it seems like your flow is more complete. I think accent shouldn't be changed at all. Do your thing bro. I have a heavy Chicago accent that make even some US people look at my rhymes and they don't think they rhyme. Fucking it though. Keep at it brothaman

It really depends on what kinda music you wanna make. If your rapping over some crunk/trap beat, trying to sound gangster. The accent doesn't fit really. I heard an old song you recorded, and you have an American twang to your voice when you rap. I think your more traditional accent, can work, I just think the beat needs to be something a little different to match it. Create your own sound like.
Check out fakear-morning in japan. I think that would sound, cool with ya voice. |

In my opinion.. There are dozens of talented British/UK artists, but I don't think any are truly famous? ..Not sure off the top of my head, but it's because of their accents and they also use a slew of slang unfamiliar to most of the world.
I liked Rut's idea about how to counter it though.
Generally people who have heavy accents, have trouble emphasizing certain syllables, etc.. Also as they're speaking they tend to hold onto certain syllables longer and it tends to cause problems when joining words. There's not too much else you can do, I'd just lose the accent.. Just because you no longer carry an accent doesn't mean you're not truly yourself or are no longer reppin where you're from, people change constantly for better or worse. Give it a try.. If not, accents aren't hard to pick up! Good luck. |

LMFAO titu I think its based on how you really want your raps to sound. Altering an accent isnt phony, just difficult. I can rap like im spanish if I want to and sound totally legit, because I speak spanish and know how to speak with a spanish accent. It doesnt make me any less real. Its purely determined by how you want to sound. If you want to be understood more clearly, you can always listen to american artists and practice rapping their lyrics with their accent just as you would if you wanted to learn to rap in spanish, but its purely up to you

Thank You all. I really appreciate y'all took the time out to help me.
There are two points I would like to share. First, accent changes from place to place. Even within the same city. As Im from pakistan, its natural to have my own accent (but as rutter stated, It has that american twang. Mainly because i spent some time in Cali.) I dont sould like rest of the pakis tho. I share another thinking process which says " You cant have your own accent as english is not your first language. Since it's not your mother tongue, you can neither contribute to the evolution of this language, nor can you have your own accent. " As ransom said, I find it phonny to fuck around with my accent. As changing an accent is not only difficult, but it also means I'm trying to copy another accent which contributes to the theory of being fake. Drizzle, I know what ya talking about. Its because my mother tongue (Urdu) is one of the few languages in world which makes it's speaker to twist its tongue in every way. Mainly because it is evolved from a lot of other languages which includes english aswell. So putting an emphasis on syllables has never been an issue for me. EVP, what do you mean by dropping an accent? I cant drop it entirely. But I can work on the words which sound awkward. Can anybody give a listen to my audios and telme what specific words/Kind of words i need to work on? I guess I can change some awkward words without being tagged as fake lol |

I'll give your audios a listen later and see if I can pick out a few for ya.
As for dropping the accent.. It's simply a matter of practice n repetition, basically like what Mission was saying.. You teach yourself just like you were trying to learn another language, eventually you can pick up or lose an accent.

I listened to the track you have on the LA radio, not bad man.
There isn't much you need to work on to be honest, your accent doesn't overshadow your lyrics in my opinion.. I found you have alot of trouble when it comes to stressing the letter E though.

Haven't listened to your audios so can't comment specifically about your accent...so just general points:
1. You need to be clearly understood, so if you're changing your voice so more people can understand what you saying that's fine. That's a clarity/pronunciation thing rather than what you're really getting at, I'm guessing. 2. Your rap voice will not be the same as your talking voice. Rapping is not talking. Listen to any rapper spitting a verse & giving an interview, it's not the same. 3. That said, you need to be authentic...your voice changes depending on the environments you're exposed to. But you shouldn't really be putting on an American accent because that's what you think rap sounds like, for example. 4. Your voice will change over time, you grow into your sound/style/voice...loads of rappers will advance/progress over the course of their albums. Pick any rapper who has longevity and there will be a progression of some sort. |

Well coming from an american in so cal i dont think that you should have to change your accent i think that you should learn to own it and manipulate it with your music and vice versa so that when you put the accent with the lyrics and the beat and pepper some swag in there it comes together to create something great.... dont loose the accent just learn how to use it to your advantage and how to make it work i think that would be easier then actually trying to drop it... like diem lol i can do a fake accent for a little while but i cant keep it up cause im from cali i dont have one i would think it would be equally difficult to drop one when you have it. thats just my opinion
